STEM Unbound Event with Ingenuity Middle School Students
About
On October 24, 2024, The Poly STEM Outreach Club attended a STEM event at Rita Rossi Colwell Center, where 5 of our members taught and experimented with Middle School Students; they taught them how to extract DNA from a strawberry, and gave them a hands-on learning experience by letting them extract their own DNA from a strawberry.
What did we do?
We wanted to give the students an experience of being a scientist and working in a lab for a day, that's why we did an activity called a strawberry DNA extraction, where we try to extract DNA out of a strawberry. We used accessible materials that you can find at home like alcohol, dish soap, water, cups, coffee filter etc. Using those materials we successfully extracted DNA. It was a fun and exciting moment for the students and our club members. MISSION SUCCESS!
